Despite amended proposals offering a larger share of potential sports betting revenue, California’s Indian tribes remain steadfast in their opposition to two proposed ballot initiatives aiming to legalize online sports betting in the state. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA), representing 52 tribes, reiterated their strong disapproval, raising concerns about tribal sovereignty and the legitimacy of offshore operators involved in the initiatives.
Initial versions of the proposals offered tribes a 10% share of sports betting revenue. However, in an attempt to gain tribal support, proponents recently revised the offers, increasing the tribe’s potential share to 15%. Despite this change, CNIGA remains unmoved.
The association’s objections go beyond financial considerations. They express anxiety about “divide and conquer” tactics allegedly employed by initiative proponents, aiming to fracture tribal unity and legitimize offshore betting operators with questionable practices. Additionally, CNIGA raises concerns about the initiatives potentially jeopardizing tribal sovereignty and regulatory authority over gaming within their territories.
In light of their unwavering opposition, CNIGA urges the proponents to withdraw the initiatives altogether. They believe the current proposals present unnecessary risks to tribal governments and responsible gaming practices within the state.
The fate of the proposed initiatives remains uncertain. With tribal opposition solidifying, proponents face an uphill battle in garnering the necessary support to get the measures on the ballot. Meanwhile, the possibility of alternative proposals or legislative solutions addressing sports betting legalization may emerge in the future.
