The study, which followed around 70 homeless individuals in Los Angeles and San Francisco who received $750 per month for a year, yielded promising results. Participants reported a significant improvement in their ability to meet basic needs like food and shelter. Moreover, the data showed a striking decrease in unshelteredness among the group receiving cash.
Specifically, the study found:
- Reduced Unshelteredness: At the beginning of the study, 30% of the participants receiving cash reported being unsheltered in the previous month. This figure dropped to just 12% six months later, compared to a minimal decrease from 28% to 25% in the control group not receiving cash.
- Improved Basic Needs Fulfillment: Participants reported using the money to secure essential necessities like food, clothing, and hygiene products, significantly improving their overall well-being.
While the study period ended after six months, researchers are currently tracking the participants for another six months to assess the long-term impact of the cash payments. The final report is expected to provide further insights into the sustainability and effectiveness of this approach.
The findings of this study align with similar research conducted in other parts of the world, suggesting that unconditional cash assistance can be a viable solution for alleviating homelessness.
