United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby has taken steps to reassure customers following a series of safety incidents involving the airline’s aircraft. In a letter sent to customers on Monday, Kirby acknowledged the concerns and outlined the company’s commitment to addressing safety issues promptly and comprehensively.

The recent incidents have sparked worries among passengers and aviation authorities. Last Friday, a Boeing plane operated by United was discovered to be missing an external panel upon landing in Oregon. This incident added to a string of other events involving Boeing aircraft, including one in Houston where a plane rolled onto the grass, and another in San Francisco where a tire was lost after takeoff.

In response to these events, Kirby announced that United is pausing orders for Boeing Max 10 aircraft and is considering a potential switch to Airbus, Boeing’s competitor. He emphasized that safety remains the airline’s top priority and that they are thoroughly reviewing each incident to inform safety training and procedures.

Meanwhile, in Washington, DC, the head of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Michael Whitaker, has raised concerns about Boeing’s safety protocols. In an interview with NBC News, Whitaker stated that Boeing needs to focus more on improving safety standards, especially after an FAA audit revealed shortcomings in safety practices.

The FAA audit was prompted by an incident involving a Boeing 737-Max 9 aircraft operated by Alaska Airlines, where the door plug blew out during flight. This incident, along with others, has led to increased scrutiny of Boeing’s manufacturing and safety processes.

Adding to the concerns, a recent mechanical issue forced a United Airlines flight from San Francisco to Japan to return to the gate for inspection before takeoff. This marks the eighth maintenance-related problem with United flights departing from San Francisco in the past two weeks.

Kirby’s email to customers highlighted United’s collaboration with employees to enhance safety procedures and reiterated their cooperation with the FAA’s investigations into the recent mishaps.

As United Airlines works to address these safety challenges, passengers are encouraged to stay informed about the airline’s safety measures and any updates regarding their flights.
