The White House is facing off against Republican criticism following President Biden’s recognition of Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31st, which fell on Easter Sunday this year.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters the President stands for bringing people together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of every American.

The annual Trans Day of Visibility celebrates the accomplishments and resilience of transgender people. President Biden issued a proclamation marking the occasion, drawing condemnation from some conservatives, including former President Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana, and Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre addressed the controversy during a press briefing. “The President remains committed to bringing the country together and upholding the dignity and freedoms of all Americans,” Jean-Pierre stated. “Transgender people are part of the fabric of our nation, and Trans Day of Visibility is an important opportunity to recognize their contributions.”

Critics, however, argued that President Biden’s recognition of the day on Easter Sunday was disrespectful to Christians celebrating the religious holiday. Former President Trump’s campaign spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, called for an apology to “millions of Catholics and Christians across America” who consider Easter a holy day.

The White House maintains that the President’s actions were not intended to diminish the importance of Easter. Jean-Pierre countered that some politicians are “trying to create divisions where none exist.” She emphasized that recognizing the transgender community can coexist with celebrating religious holidays.

The incident highlights the ongoing cultural and political debates surrounding transgender rights in the United States. While the Biden Administration emphasizes inclusivity, some Republicans continue to express opposition to policies and actions seen as promoting transgender visibility.
