In a recent development, New York’s largest healthcare network, Northwell Health, has agreed to pay a settlement of one million dollars for wrongfully charging patients for COVID tests. This settlement comes after an investigation led by New York Attorney General Letitia James uncovered deceptive practices related to COVID testing charges.
According to AG Letitia James, Northwell Health had misleadingly advertised three of its emergency departments in New York City and Long Island as COVID testing sites between March 2020 and March 2021. Patients who visited these locations for COVID testing were billed standard emergency room charges, despite only receiving a COVID test.
The investigation found that the signage and advertising at these emergency departments led patients to believe that they were visiting dedicated COVID testing sites. However, they were subsequently charged higher fees associated with emergency room visits, causing financial strain on many individuals during the pandemic.
As part of the settlement, Northwell Health has already refunded approximately 400 thousand dollars to affected patients. Additionally, the healthcare network will pay a total of 650 thousand dollars in penalties to address the deceptive practices.
AG Letitia James emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in healthcare billing, especially during public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic. The settlement serves as a reminder to healthcare providers to ensure clarity and accuracy in their communications regarding services and associated charges.
