The criminal hush money trial involving former President Donald Trump concluded its second day of witness testimony. On Tuesday, Judge Juan Merchan presided over arguments regarding potential contempt of court charges against Trump. The allegations revolve around claims that Trump breached a gag order by attacking key witnesses.

During the trial, prosecutors accused Trump of violating the gag order on ten occasions before and during the proceedings. In response, Trump’s defense team argued that his statements were reactionary and aimed at countering attacks from other sources while attempting to comply with the court’s directives.

Following the conclusion of the second day of testimony, former President Trump criticized the trial’s validity. Trump alleged that the trial was orchestrated at the behest of President Biden to hinder his involvement in campaigning activities.

Earlier in the trial, a prosecution witness, David Pecker, testified that during his tenure at the “National Enquirer,” he facilitated payments through Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, to suppress a story about an alleged affair with a Playboy model. These revelations form a crucial aspect of the case against Trump.

Apart from the trial proceedings, the New York Police Department (NYPD) is investigating reports of external groups funding anti-Israel protests at universities in New York City. The NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Operations expressed suspicions of “professional agitators” fueling protests related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. The observation that student encampments at Columbia and NYU are using identical color tents has raised concerns about organized support behind these protests.

Additionally, the judge overseeing Trump’s trial is reviewing whether his posts on Truth Social violate the court’s gag order. This development suggests that Trump may face sanctions for allegedly breaching the order during the trial.

In an update on the trial, David Pecker, a key prosecution witness, returned to the stand. Pecker, the former publisher of the National Enquirer, detailed payments made as part of a “catch-and-kill scheme” to suppress negative stories about Trump. Prosecutors are aiming to establish a pattern leading to payments related to Trump’s alleged affair with Stormy Daniels, a pivotal aspect of the trial.

The recent testimony from David Pecker has brought attention to alleged coordination between the National Enquirer and the Trump campaign in disseminating false news stories during the 2016 election. Andrew Weissmann, a former Department of Justice official, along with NBC News Correspondent Vaughn Hillyard and MSNBC Legal Analyst Charles Coleman, provided analysis on Pecker’s testimony and the collaboration between the National Enquirer and the Trump campaign.
