In New York State alone, Triple A expects an unprecedented 2.8 million residents to travel during the holiday weekend, setting a new record for the state. The most congested period is predicted to be Thursday afternoon before Memorial Day, particularly on the New York State Thruway stretching from New York City to Albany. Travel experts advise planning routes ahead of time and expecting extended travel times, especially on Sunday and Monday evenings, where delays could be 50 percent longer than usual in areas around New York City.

New York City, renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and cultural offerings, ranks as one of the top three domestic travel destinations for the holiday. The increase in travel numbers this Memorial Day is seen as a positive indicator of economic recovery and a return to pre-pandemic activity levels. With more Americans vaccinated and public health measures easing across many states, the willingness to travel is reaching heights unseen in nearly two decades. This surge in movement underscores the importance of travel safety and planning, as millions take to the roads and skies to kick off the summer season.
