Jennifer Cofer, a prominent figure at Texas’s M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, is among those voicing strong objections, arguing that the authorization sends a misleading message about the safety of vaping.
The FDA’s statement highlights the potential benefits for adult smokers who use e-cigarettes as a means to quit traditional cigarettes, suggesting that these benefits outweigh the risks posed to youth. However, Cofer and other health experts argue that this perspective is dangerously short-sighted. They point out that menthol-flavored e-cigarettes are particularly appealing to younger users, who often choose flavored products to mask the harsh taste of tobacco.
“All the studies show that the vast majority of kids who admit to vaping chose a flavor to hide the tobacco taste,” Cofer emphasizes. She warns that the FDA’s decision to authorize a flavored product could exacerbate the already significant problem of youth vaping, which has been linked to various health issues and the potential for long-term addiction.
