Travelers flying JetBlue Airways beware: the budget airline has implemented a new fee structure that tacks on additional charges for checked luggage during peak travel times. This move comes as JetBlue seeks to boost profitability amidst rising operational costs.

New York City based JetBlue Airlines is charging more for checked luggage during peak hours. Jacquelyn Karl reports.

Previously, JetBlue offered consistent checked baggage fees regardless of travel time. Now, passengers on flights during peak periods will face an extra $5 for their first checked bag and an additional $10 for their second. These peak periods are not explicitly defined by JetBlue, but the airline emphasizes that the new fees will only apply during high-traffic times.

The impact of this change varies depending on the passenger’s fare class and loyalty status. Here’s a breakdown of the new fees:

  • Blue Basic, Blue, and Blue Extra: These base fares do not include a free carry-on bag. Any carry-on brought to the gate will be checked and incur a fee of $65 for the first or second bag, and $180 for the third. During peak times, these fees increase to $70 and $80 for the first and second checked bag, respectively.
  • Blue Plus: This fare class includes a free first checked bag. However, the second checked bag will now cost $50 during peak times, up from the standard fee of $40.
  • Mint: Premium flyers on JetBlue’s Mint class are not affected by the new peak pricing. Their fares include up to two checked bags free of charge, regardless of travel time.
  • Mosaic Members and JetBlue Plus Cardmembers: These loyalty programs offer free checked bag allowances, but some limitations may apply during peak times. It’s advisable for members to check their specific benefits with JetBlue.

JetBlue emphasizes that travelers can still avoid peak fees by prepaying for checked bags at least 24 hours before their flight. Prepaying comes with a discount of $10 on the first and second checked bags.

While the airline maintains that these changes are necessary to optimize operations, some passengers are expressing frustration. The added cost can be a significant burden, especially for travelers on a budget.
