Disgraced former attorney Alex Murdaugh is officially appealing his conviction for the 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son, Paul Murdaugh. The appeal, filed with the South Carolina Supreme Court, seeks a new trial on the grounds of alleged juror bias and misconduct during the original proceedings.

Murdaugh’s legal team argues that the jury was improperly influenced by the inclusion of evidence related to his financial crimes, which they claim had no relevance to the murder case. During the trial, prosecutors presented details of Murdaugh’s extensive history of financial fraud, alleging it established a motive for the murders. His attorneys contend this evidence prejudiced the jury and led to a guilty verdict unrelated to the facts of the case.

The appeal also accuses a former Colleton County court clerk of improperly swaying members of the jury. According to the filing, the clerk allegedly engaged in conversations with jurors that may have influenced their decision-making. Murdaugh’s defense team argues that such actions violate the defendant’s right to a fair trial and warrant a retrial.

Murdaugh was convicted in March 2023 and sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole. The high-profile trial captured national attention, with graphic details about the killings and Murdaugh’s alleged web of lies and deceit. Prosecutors claimed Murdaugh killed his family members at the family’s estate to distract from investigations into his financial misconduct.

The State Attorney General’s office now has 30 days to respond to the appeal. Legal experts say the process of reviewing and ruling on the appeal could take months. If the appeal is denied, Murdaugh could potentially pursue further legal remedies in federal courts.

For now, Murdaugh remains incarcerated while his legal team fights for a new trial. The case continues to be a focal point in South Carolina, reflecting broader discussions about justice, privilege, and accountability.
